To maintain inner peace in a bustling world—peace that can join together the performance on stage and the audience off stage to create a moment for both sides to live in.

Ruo-yu Liu, a former TV hostess and winner of the Golden Bell Awards for Best Children’s Programs, gave up the spotlight she had enjoyed on the screen and flew over to New York for further study at the age of 26. After returning to Taiwan, she made every effort to explore traditional folk plays and arts in search of her true cultural body language as well as her own drive for life. She founded U-Theater in 1988. Chih-chun Huang from Malaysia later joined as drum instructor. The idea of U-Theater is to drum in one’s own peace. Therefore drummers learn how to sit in meditation before learning drumming techniques in order to seek the fusion of “Zen and Art.” This is a unique performing style nurtured on the multi-cultural land of Taiwan.

For more than twenty years, Liu, along with U-Theater, has received numerous honors and even won high praise internationally. They are repeatedly invited to perform at important international art festivals. While reaching the zenith on their artistic journey, Liu and Huang, now as husband and wife, started to teach prisoners in Changhua Prison how to drum, hoping to change them for the better by releasing majestic power of art through drumming. They further extend the training system to young students for the education and preservation of the art. Nearly ten years of solid effort has paid off. These young learners have not only gone through stunning changes, but also showed us that the integration of art and culture has given hope to local humanistic spirit and illustrated the uniqueness of Taiwanese culture and values.
